camp Tutira Maia
Camp
Camp giorgia
On the 2nd day at camp we did heaps of things. First, we got out of bed and had breakfast. I had vegemite toast and cornflakes with pears.
Next, Ryan the outdoor education teacher, met us out on the deck outside of our cabins. He told us what we were going to do today and who would be doing what at what time. All of us went on the low ropes first. We got taught the basic movement of being on the ropes and what to do if your not on the ropes. You have to stand with one foot forward, one foot back and you have to hold up your hands to catch the people on the ropes fall.
There were 4 types of ropes. 3 were with a partner and 1 was by yourself. Funny thing about this was, I had great balance on the ropes but I hop off and I can’t stand properly.
After the low ropes, we went back to the cabins and had morning tea.
Ms Brady, called everybody over and we set off in our groups to lake Tutira . Our group was with Candy, Kael’s mum. We got to the lake to find Ryan parked there waiting for us. He had come over early to set up the canoes and everything else. Our group, Sophie, Maia, Alys, Sativa, Anupreet and I, were on the canoes first. We had Mr. experienced Ryan with us as an adult supervisor which helped us a lot. We had race in our double-canoe catamaran with the other 2 teams. Ms Brady’s team one. It was a race to get the closest to the red and white buoy.
While the other 3 teams did the canoeing we did some problem solving activities. We did a math one, where you had to work out how to make some numbers by standing on numbered pads, we also did a game called mind create, where you have to try to find a path around 25 pads.
When the canoeing and problem solving activities had finished, we went back to camp for lunch.
The last activity for the day was the mud walk. I tried to only get muddy when I had too.(it worked!!!) I was the first inline behind Ryan which was good but bad. He kept trying to get mud all over me to get me really muddy. The good news was though that when ever there was a little stream trickling down he rocks I could wash my hands in it before it got muddy!
I loved my 2nd day at camp and I can’t wait until camp Waitomo !!!

The Unexpected
Cameron’s
fists were clenched in a tight ball and his knuckles were turning white.
The
next thing I knew Cameron’s fist collided with Jays nose. He was covering it
with his hand and groaning in pain. Even though Jay’s palm was covering his
nose I knew that there was blood dripping out of it. An angry Cameron was now storming
down the halls and towards the front doors.
I
called after him while running towards his direction. The sound of the glass
doors slamming shut cut me off.
I
ran outside and saw him heading towards the forest right beside school.
“Cameron
wait up!” I yelled,
But
his pace became quicker.
I
kept calling him and eventually ended up right behind him.
I
was almost sprinting to keep up.
“Go
away… please.” He hissed.
I
stood still and watched him hurry deeper into the woods.
The
next thing I saw made me blink several times and rub my eyes to make sure I was
seeing clearly. I was.
I
could see cocoa coloured fur covering Cameron’s body.
I’m
not saying that he had turned into an immensely hairy male.
I’m
saying that he had turned into a wolf.
A
huge wolf.
His
chocolate shaded eyes were glaring into mine.
I
could feel my heart thumping. However, I wasn’t afraid.
His
eyes were sharp with a hint of softness.
I
knew that if he hurt me he would regret it. A lot.
My
mind was running at full speed. Everything that had gone on in the past 5
minutes was bizarre.
I
was asking myself questions even though I already knew some of the answers.
Cameron’s
a shape-shifter?
He
is a gigantic wolf and I never knew?
The
question that I was most curious about was how?
How
can he shape-shift?
I
was so sure that the whole people being werewolves’ thing were fictitious.
Even
though I just saw a human shape-shift into a wolf, part of me is thinking that
this is fake. That this is just a dream that feels so real. Another part of me
is hoping that all of this isn't a dream, and hoping that Cameron is a
werewolf.
The
reason for that being is because not many people, if any can say that their
best friend can shape-shift into a gigantic werewolf.

ipad imovie trailers
Today the year 6's left for their camp at Tutira. The year 7's as well as some honorary year 7's have worked on making movie trailers. Take a look. What do you think?
The Ranfurly Shield
We had an exciting
time this week when we went and saw the 'Mighty Magpies' bring the Ranfurly
Shield to Hastings. Check out some photos of us and some of our stories.
The other day the sun shone upon us and the bell rang
for an early morning tea. I raced out with my friends Danielle and Rhiannon to
talk to our guitar teacher Naomi. We asked “Can we go to town to see the
Magpies and the Ranfurly Shield?” She happily let us go. The loud bell rang and
our school converged on the centre of town to meet the Magpies and the well
known Ranfurly Shield. It was very loud and I felt like the whole world was
going to enclose on me. The loud bagpipes were playing in the distance as the
Magpies came up on the back of the ute. All you could hear was screaming. I
felt very proud as they walked up with the shield because they did so well and
it was very cool to have a rugby team from Hawke’s Bay win the shield. A lot of
speeches and outstanding performances later they split up and signed some
autographs. It was very hectic as all of us tried to get as many as possible. I
got three and one was from the Mayor Lawrence Yule. There it ended. I walked
back to school with my buddy Ashlee feeling proud to be in Hawke’s Bay!
By Sophie
“Look there they are!” everyone was shouting. The
bagpipes were going, everyone was cheering, because the Magpies were here with
the Ranfurly shield. We were at the civic square outside the Hastings public library, sitting on the cold
concrete with the sweltering sun on our
faces. Then all the Magpies jumped out of the back of the trucks, then formed a
line while a kapahaka group performed for them. Once that was over they walked
up the back but on the way they signed some autographs and gave out some hi-fives.
The whole team was there apart from Israel Dagg. He wasn’t there because he was
training with the All Black’s. Then the Captain of the Magpies Mike Coman said
a few words and held up the shield for everyone to see. Then Hastings boys and the kapahaka group did tika
tonu at the end. When we were walking back we got to have a photo with the one
and only RANFURLY SHIELD! I was at the back holding it while the rest of the
class had a hand on it. I felt really proud to be in the bay at that time because
the Ranfurly shield was in Hawke’s Bay, and I hope they win next week.
By Tyrone
‘’Yay yay yay’’ I said to myself we are going to see the Ranfurly
shield.
Were at the parade ‘’no magpies though’’.
A lot of people are there and I could only see one school Riverslea
school.
‘’Oh my gosh it is so hot’’.
Bagpipes are getting played.
Magpies on trucks.
I’m so excited.
By the time the Magpies got to the back of the library, there was a
whole lot of people at the back the library.
There was about 5 school there was Riverslea , Hastings Intermediate , Hastings
Central and a few more.
A few more hopped off.
Someone spoke into a microphone, and told everyone when they last had
the shield was. Mike Coman said a few words about his team and the shield.
Boy’s High did a fantastic haka. We were allowed to get things signed. My
favourite players are Zac Guildford, Ihaia West, Alby Mathewson, Chris Eaton,
Mike Coman, Gillies Kaka and Karl Lowe. I touched the shield, it felt really
good. When the parade was finished we all went back to school. We went back to
class and all I could think about was how exciting the day had been.

Duffy Theatre
We were lucky to have the Duffy Theatre visit St Joseph's school this week. They told the story of how Duffy lost his words words and couldn't read. It was an entertaining show with lots and lots of humour. Here are some pictures from the show.
HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA
A rich couple’s Porsche broke down and they needed a place to stay
coincidentally there was a hotel nearby. They went inside and asked how much a
room was, the hotel owner said “Free but enter at your own risk”. The husband
asked “why”? the hotel owner said “you’ll find out”. So they got a room and the
number was 397.
They got their room and unpacked, by the time they had finished
unpacking it was 9.00 pm. At 12.00 pm they heard thumping and screaming, from
next door in 396. The next morning the lady asked is there anyone else here?
The hotel owner said lots of people come but no one goes.
That night the woman got woken up by screaming and thumping, so the
woman got out of bed and went next door and looked through the keyhole. She saw
that the room was white she then tried to open the door but it was locked.
The next night the women woke up by screaming and thumping again. She
then got up and went next door, again looked through the keyhole but this time
the room was orange, again she tried opening the door but once again it was
locked.
On the 3rd night she was yet again woken up by screaming and
thumping, so once more she looked through the keyhole, to find that the room
was RED. In the morning she went down stairs and asked the hotel owner what was
haunting the room, the hotel owner said a woman with a white dress, orange hair
and red eyes.
The woman asked if she could please have the key to that room, so that
night she woke up at 12.00 pm and went next door she unlocked the door. “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh”
she screamed she got pulled in and door slammed shut. The husband then rushed
in.
And neither of them came out
THE END? Dun dun duuuuuuun.

Grim Reaper Broadway
The Grim (Grim Reaper) sneaks up on a
little girl with an ice-cream. The girl turns around after Grims attempt to scare her and she says “are
you from the circus?” He sighs and says “I need to get a real job”.
He sings up for a job which was
stand up comedy. “How about that airline food”. *Cricket sounds*. “Tough crowd
eh”. A guy at the front throws a tomato at his head. Grim says “who threw
that?” Everyone says “boo, get off the stage!” After the show he goes into an
ally and starts drinking beer. After his beer he sings a little bit of Akons
song “lonely” and then says “you were always right mother, I was never meant to
be a comedian, I should have been a plumber like you!”
After his little sulk, he sees a sign
reading: Broadway where all your dreams come true. “That’s it” he says “I’m
going Broadway”. A little while after he decides to go Broadway he flies to Hollywood .
He stands in front of a Major Theatre and starts talking to a supervisor.
The supervisor gives him the job of going
Broadway. Grim performs and everyone starts booing him. He decides after the
show “maybe Hollywood isn’t the one for me, But California still can be!”
“Ok” Grim says “I have arrived in California and I am
looking for a place wanting a comedian, it could be a bar or a restaurant.” He
decides to work at a bar, and as soon as he walks in an old lady yells at him
“you killed my son”. “lady, calm down” grim says ‘I am here for a performance”.
The lady says back “oh, ok but you still killed my son”!
He performs and his most not boring joke
is “what did the statue say to the other statue? Statue bro?” He is still
getting boos at his performance
and a hobo steals his scythe, so Grim yells at him “Oi, for the second time,
why do you want my scythe?” The hobo says “I am the Grim Reaper now!” *Grim
shoots a beam out of his hand and it zaps the hobo*. The hobo yelps and says
“ok ok, you can have it back”.
The End….. To Be
Continued…..
Will Grim ever find a job, will the hobo
actually give it back or will he run away?

sophie and rhiannons story
In class we have been doing some buddy writing. We drew eight
boxes and planned our writing in them. We separated the story into 4 paragraphs and
transferred our ideas into them. Here is our story about The Potato Head's Journey
Potato Head’s Journey
Once there were two fat juicy delicious potatoes. Miss
Potato Head and Mr Potato Head. The potatoes lived on a muddy potato farm by
the power station in Ireland .
One by one the potatoes were picked, washed and bagged. Miss and Mr Potato Head
were in the last bag and they were shipped to Germany .
While they were on their trip Miss and Mr Potato Head
became best friends. It was a long and bumpy trip. Eventually Mr Potato Head
fell out of the big bag and he rolled and rolled around the huge ship. He felt
quite queasy. “Throw down the anchor” the sailor said fiercely. The next thing
they knew they were all split up but these two were taken to the F.B.I for an assessment.
Once the president realised they could talk they
became top edition spies.
They were sent on
different missions and ended up spying on each other. Little did they
know they were betrayed and put in a restaurant called Labola and a ginormous
hand grabbed them by the stomach and a potato peeler. They were peeled and put
in a with boiling water. Luckily they escaped. The chef Ramsey’s hand slipped
and they feel down the garbage disposal.
They fell for each other and ended up getting married
in a resort in Hawaii .
They ended up being re accepted into the F.B.I and got sent on a special
mission to the Hungry Games.
They went through a circular tube and ended up in the
food bowl of Cat and Pete. They tried to run away then another gigantic hand
grabbed them. It was Cat. She started laughing and said “this is winning
quality”. Mr Potato was now in the stomach of Cat or Kittenville. A couple of
minutes later Mrs Potato was in the stomach of Pete of Kittenville. And that
was the end of Mr and Mrs Potato Head.

Camp Waitomo
Day 3 at Camp Waitomo
arrived and we got ready and had breakfast. Then we went to the Woodlyn Park
show. That was interesting because the man was talking about the farmland and
his mother. The part I liked about it most was when he showed us how to get up
tall trees in the old days. The funniest part was when he chucked a foam axe
and I thought he chucked a real one at us. It was cool. When he pulled a yellow
string an animal came. It was cool how the animals knew to come and where to
go. My favourite animal was when the dogs came in and when they got some sheep.
He said his dream was going to the USA. Then we went back to camp.

CAMP
HIGHLIGHT.
“It’s time to have some fun at camp Waitomo”!!!
The year 7’s, year 8’s and the teachers/parent helpers
got onto the bus and drove off to the Waitomo Caves. The bus driver stopped in
Taupo so we could have some lunch and have a toilet break. We stopped in
Otorohanga to look in the kiwi house. We stayed at the kiwi house and did a
quiz. I found the kiwi house quite fascinating because they are endangered
animals so it was cool to see them in real life. There was a male and a female
in the enclosure.
We got back onto the bus and drove the rest of the way
to Waitomo Top 10 Holiday Park. Once we found our cabins we sorted out who
sleeps where. In my cabin there was Edith, Dahlia, Rhian, Chloe and Rhiannon.
Later that day we had a play in the playground, some dinner which was a
delicious lasagne made by Mrs W.S, a swim in the cold pool and the hot tub and had
a shower. A really yum dessert was brought to the table, a self-saucing pudding
with cream, “YUM”. After a good nights sleep and a yum breakfast we headed off
to Stubbs Farm to do some caving, abseiling and the covenant which is like a
treasure hunt. My highlight of that day was caving because it was my first time
doing it and it was a new experience. The abseiling was fun as well, as was the
covenant but the caving was still the best. After a nice lunch, shower, dinner,
dessert, and a sleep for the second night we were all ready to go to the
Woodlyn Park show. Billy Black was a very funny guy who, I thought spent all of
his time training his farm animals and setting the stage up because it was very
cool. We drove to the Discovery Centre and learnt about cave creatures and the
formations as well as glow worms.
“Now its time for a bushwalk with ‘Nigel’ (a.k.a Mr
Easson)
We went on a Ruakuri bushwalk.
It wasn’t tiring but I did enjoy it.
Then we got dropped off at a dry glow worm cave. We
walked down the track and looked formations of stuff made by the rocks. Then we
walked over to a platform where we got on a boat and looked at the glow worms
in pitch black darkness.
By the time people were ready for showers dinner was
ready so we ate our dinner, pudding and had supper.
Day 4 has arrived and we went to a wet adventure cave.
That one was my overall highlight of the whole week because we got to climb up
waterfalls. It got a bit deep (which was fun) and we had to turn off our lights
that were on our helmets.
By Ella
My highlight at Waitomo
was when we went into the caves at Stubbs Farm. It was the best time of the
whole week at camp. Especially when we had to get all muddy, that was the best
part of caving even though the water was cold and all that. But it was worth it
because once I saw the glow worms it just blew me away. Once I saw the glow worms
for my very fist time I thought it looked like the night sky and that it was a
very good memory to remember. Getting all muddy, well I thought that it was fun
because that meant I got to have a shower. The showers I went to were the best
because they were all the right temperature for me. But there was a very
particular cave that really caught my eye and that was the Ruakuri Cave which
means Two dog cave. It was the best because you had the spiral walkway with the
lights on the side of it. In the middle of the spiral was a huge rock and it
had water coming down on top of it. There was a test where we had to look like a
stalagmite, a stalactite and as a glow worm. It was fun but also was the part
when we got to walk in the dark while holding the bar. I felt really scared but
it was fun. And that was my highlight at camp.
By Danielle A
The highlight of my experience at Waitomo was the
Huhunui cave. We had to wear a helmet with lights on it and we got to wear a
big brown jumper like thing.
Huhunui cave was a really fun cave because we
got to climb up a mini waterfall. Before we started climbing up the waterfall I
could feel and hear my heart beating because I was so nervous, but once we
started climbing up that mini waterfall my nerves went away. I felt really adventurous
almost like Bear Grylls but we were doing a lot more smaller and less scary
stuff. Manraj was a little bit ahead of me on the waterfall but she would
sometimes stop until I caught up to her. Something that was on my mind after
the waterfall was that I could climb a waterfall without a harness and a rope
but when I was doing abseiling with a harness and two ropes I was a lot more
nervous!
Once we
finished climbing the waterfall we went into a little cave, and part way
through that cave there was a small gap we had to go through, and then there
was a slippery wall we had to climb up.
When we were walking through water in the cave I would
force myself to not look up because I was scared I was going to see wetas and
spiders. I would also make sure that I didn’t look down into the water because
I was worried I was going to spot some eels. I hate eels because they remind me
of snakes.
In one part of the cave we had to walk in complete
darkness and we had to grab on to the persons shoulders who was in front of
you. Manraj was in front of me and Baani was behind me. Baani kept dancing and
moving me around which was making me a little bit nervous, then finally we got
to turn on our head lights. To me the worst part of Huhunui cave was walking
through the darkness with Baani dancing around behind me.
A little while after that we stopped about half way
through the cave and sat on some rocks. We drank some nice hot raro and we got
to eat some biscuits.
When we made it through the cave and reached the
outside there was still some more walking to do. We had to walk through bush
and a pond and then before we reached the van we drove to the cave in we had to
walk on a muddy creek. We had to be careful where we were walking because if
you took a wrong step you could fall into the mud.
Even though going through the cave, bush, pond and muddy
creek made me crave a nice warm shower back at the camp, Huhunui cave is still
the highlight of my experience at Waitomo.

I trooped inside the old farm doors.
Yeah!
I’ve been waiting to go to this show for ages and now we are finally here.
I sit down in the old worn out chair and wait for the show to begin. I’m very excited.
Billy runs on stage. He’s wearing an old country hat and some red bands and looks like an old country bloke.
“Good morning!” he yells and gets into it straight away.
The first thing he does is talk about what people had to doto set up farms a long time ago. It was very interesting. He talked about the tools and about the way they worked.
He showed us how they cut down the trees to make way for the farmlands.
Billy cut into a tree with his axe and then rammed the wedge into the tree and climbed onto it.
I was a little scared that it would break but he was a professional. Billy grabs the next wedge and rams it into the tree while still standing on the first wedge and with a big leap he was on the next ledge. Now he was near the top of the tree with has axe. He started to cut the tree and then he said that his axe was very slippery. Suddenly his axe hurtles towards us from the top of the tree. Luckily it was just a foam axe from behind the tree. Jason who was sitting beside me, let out a scream and I laughed it was hilarious!
That was my absolute favourite thing of the show and of the whole camp.
To finish it off he puts gun power in a metal tube and throws it on the ground and with a giant KABOOM! The show finishes with a bang!

MY MAIN HIGHLIGHT of camp WAITOMO
WAS THE SPA!!. IT WAS NICE AND HOT BUT THE FIRST THING WE HAD TO
DO WAS JUMP INTO THE VERY VERY COLD pool . I wasn’t keen to jump in as I don’t
really like cold water. We had to stay in the cold pool for 1 minute. It seemed
like 10 minutes. THEN AS SOON AS THE TIME was up we could get out and jump into
the nice, hot spa pool. When we got in the Spa my body had a little stinging
felling. It felt a little weird but eventually it went away. over all it was
nice, hot and relaxing and that was my highlight.
By Clayton.
My highlight at camp was going
in the wet and humongous caves. The reason why I liked these cave was because
we could get wet, muddy and splash each other. The other thing I liked about
those caves was when we were right in the middle of the cave. We ate some
cookies and had hot Raro. It gave me some energy to finish the cave. When we
were coming out I got muddy, dirty and smelly because we had to past a swamp! It
was great because I love getting dirty! It had wooden planks to walk past it. I
was nearly about to fall off but I managed to save myself. My shoes got very
smelly and that was my camp highlight.
